There’s a saying that goes “You are the company you keep.” If that’s really how the world works, Dominic Sherwood is definitely in a good place right now. First off, the 25-year-old is currently dating actress Sarah Hyland of “Modern Family” fame. Plus, his circle of friends includes none other than Taylor Swift, who cast him in the music video for her single, “Style.” On top of that, earlier this year, he was chosen to play the lead male character in <a href="http://shadowhunters.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">“Shadowhunters,”</a> a TV adaptation of best-selling young adult series <a href="http://www.cassandraclare.com/my-writing/novels/the-mortal-instruments/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">“The Mortal Instruments.”</a>

DA MAN: Hi, Dominic. For those of us new to “Shadowhunters,” can you give us a short breakdown of what to expect from the show? 
 Dominic Sherwood: I can’t wait to share this show with both existing fans and new ones! You can expect a lot of action, heartbreak, romance and massive amounts of tension.
DA MAN: Do you think that fans of the novels will be missing out by not following “Shadowhunters”? 
Dominic Sherwood: Absolutely! If it were me, I would want to see every adaptation I possibly could. And not only that, I’m proud to say this show is epic on its own.
DA MAN: The character you play, Jace Wayland, is often described being very complex: a “jerk with a heart of gold” with a lot of quirks and a lot of emotional baggage. How do you get into a character like that? 
Dominic Sherwood: I developed Jace by looking deeply into every emotion he feels—love, passion, anger—and then trying very hard to hide them under layers of arrogance and sarcasm. Exactly as Jace would.
DA MAN: Back in 2015, you tweeted “First day of training for <a href="https://twitter.com/ShadowhuntersTV" target="_blank" rel="noopener">@ShadowhuntersTV</a> for <a href="https://twitter.com/abcfamily" target="_blank" rel="noopener">@ABCFamily</a> and I am in serious pain!!” Just what kind of training did they put you through for this show? 
Dominic Sherwood: The first is physical. That included heavy muscle training. The Shadowhunters are soldiers and have to look as such. I am skinny as a rake naturally, so that had to change. Number two is stunts. Martial arts training as well as weapons training, which, as you could imagine, is the most fun.

DA MAN: This year, you’re also set to appear in “The Other.” What was it like shooting that one? 
Dominic Sherwood: My character in “The Other,” Zach Bradford, was in an incredibly dark place. So that movie was a tough look at the darker side of a person. But for me, the biggest challenges are where I enjoy myself the most.
DA MAN: Two young lovers moving into a new home and finding all sorts of bizarre things is a very common horror trope. so, what is it that will make “The Other” stand apart from, well, the others? 
Dominic Sherwood: “The Other” looks at dark-thinking people, and how evil spans from the human mind. On top of that, there’s a lot of mystery in the film. The audience is forced to draw their own conclusions at the end, which I loved about the script. Hopefully every audience member leaves with a different interpretation.

DA MAN: Looking back, one of your most recognizable appearances was in the music video for Taylor Swift’s “Style.” How did you end up being cast for this one? 
Dominic Sherwood: Taylor and I have been friends for a long time. So, I was home in London and Taylor texted me asking if I would be interested in being involved. I, of course, jumped at the idea.
DA MAN: How would you describe your own, personal style? Fashion-wise, that is. 
Dominic Sherwood: I have always loved the James Dean style; maybe that’s why Taylor thought of me for the video. Less is more in my opinion.

DA MAN: Back in 2008, you started your own band, Tamarin Sky. Do you still regularly perform or do recordings? 
Dominic Sherwood: Not at all. I love to sing, but more on my own. I write music because it’s cathartic to me. Very rarely does it go anywhere other than my living room.
DA MAN: Switching back to what lies ahead, do you have any big plans or projects for 2016? 
Dominic Sherwood: “Shadowhunters” premiered on January 12, so I had focused on that much previously. As for my plans; I’m not a “plans” person. I try to live day by day and let surprises take me on new adventures.
DA MAN: Besides music and acting, what else are you passionate about? What do you do when you simply want to have fun? 
Dominic Sherwood: When I want to get away from everything, I find a big hill, often with one of my best friends from home, and I’ll ride until the sun sets.
DA MAN: One final question: what’s the most remarkable comment you’ve ever heard from people who just realized that you have two different colored eyes? 
Dominic Sherwood: Once, I had a girl tell me they were the most beautiful things she had ever seen! I was crushing on the girl pretty hard at the time, so that will always stand out for me.
