It has been raining since early in the morning. The traffic in Jakarta during such weather is typically devastating; arriving on time would be quite a stretch. But that’s not the case for <a href="http://daman.co.id/?s=dion+wiyoko" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Dion Wiyoko</a>. Not only does he arrive on time, but Wiyoko also drives his own car to the photo-shoot location. “I hate being late,” he says nonchalantly at one point. Taking a day off from an arduous movie project simply doesn’t slow the actor down.
The year 2015 has, in fact, proven to be a very busy year for the thespian. Two of his movies (“<a href="http://daman.co.id/?s=merry+riana" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Merry Riana</a>” and “<a href="http://daman.co.id/?s=hijab" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Hijab</a>”) already hit the cinemas in January and two others will soon be released. “I am finishing the sequel to ‘<a href="http://daman.co.id/?s=si+jago+merah" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Si Jago Merah</a>’ (The Red Flame). The title is tentatively ‘<a href="http://daman.co.id/?s=air+dan+api" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Air dan Api: Si Jago Merah 2</a>’ (Water and Fire: The Red Flame 2), and the story is still about firefighters. Yet, the overall storyline has changed. The first one is more of a comedy, and the second one is more of a drama that includes several physically demanding scenes, such as saving someone from a suicide attempt and rescuing flood victims,” he passionately elaborates.

First scouted in a shopping mall by a talent manager back in 2003, the Taurean started off his career in modeling before delving into acting. But Wiyoko has finally gotten a firm grip on his acting career now and he has flourished into a real serious actor. “The more I act these days, the more I realize that acting is truly my passion. There is this unspeakable satisfaction I get from having performances that a lot of people can relate to.”

He beams with palpable excitement when raving about his upcoming project next: “In March I will have another movie coming up, momentarily titled ‘<a href="http://daman.co.id/?s=love+and+faith" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Love and Faith</a>.’ It is about the founder of Indonesia’s NISP Bank, <a href="http://daman.co.id/?s=karmaka+surjaudaja" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Karmaka Surjaudaja</a> or Kwee Tjie Hoei, who has led the bank through numerous ups and downs of the country’s economy. The movie highlights a rarely explored theme, which is the struggle of Indonesian Chinese, an ethnical minority in the country. I portray his late brother.”

The drama marks as the second biopic for Wiyoko who has previously flexed his acting muscles in “Merry Riana” as Alva, the husband of millionaire Merry Riana. “In my first biopic project, I was really stressed out because getting into the character is a lot of pressure. Alva is a cool, introverted, strong but not emotional, patient but not weak individual, which makes finding the middle ground of his personality difficult. Thankfully, after the movie is released, Merry came up to me and told me that I am so much like Alva. That statement validated all of the hard work I have poured into the movie,” the 1984-born thespian enthuses.

Asked on what his future career is, Wiyoko ambitiously envisions acting as his lifelong pursuit. “Look at Hollywood movies. Most of the leading actors are over 30 or even 40 years old. It shows that an acting career can last for a long period of time as the actors improve themselves. It is therefore a challenge for me to be consistent and to always bring my A-game for years to come,” he opens up. The Indonesian Chinese artist also cites <a href="http://daman.co.id/?s=denzel+washington" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Denzel Washington</a> as a figure he looks up to, while hoping to nab some action titles to add in to his portfolio. “Denzel can still perform in action movies impeccably even when he is no longer young. He is an inspiration, and I wish to be like him.”

Wiyoko’s life outside showbiz sounds equally full of thrills and challenges. For instance, he has been doing solo trips for his birthdays. “It all started in 2012. I decided that I wanted to go to nine cities across four countries for 16 days—Vietnam, Cambodia, Myanmar and Thailand—all by myself. In 2013, I did bungee jumping from the world’s tallest bungee jumping post in Macau. I love the adrenaline rush and adventurous spirit.” He climbed the second highest volcano in Indonesia, Mount Rinjani, for his 30th birthday. Wiyoko tells how emotional he was when finally reaching the mountain peak. “When I was on top of the mountain, I was overwhelmed by the beauty and the struggle it took to come up here. It reminded me that these solo trips are for me to reflect on my life and be grateful for what I have achieved so far.”

Aside from his solo trips, Wiyoko is an avid traveler. Drop by his Instagram account and you will find one breathtaking landscape photo after another. On his views on travelling, he honestly speaks, “I have been traveling for such a long time, and it has become one of my passions, too. Traveling opens my eyes, widens my knowledge, and alleviates my stress. Especially that since the emergence of Instagram, I am also able to brush up my photography skills even with simple devices like a camera phone.”

He has, for this year alone, listed seven mountains to climb. Expect nothing but breathtaking imageries from his upcoming adventurous trips, all shown on the social media platform. Yet, how does the actor juggle between acting schedules and personal jaunts? Wiyoko sums it up perfectly, “Movies are an escape because none of the characters I play resemble who I really am. I can be somebody else. But even movie productions can be exhausting sometimes. And traveling is a remedy to that.”
