AS SLIM AS CAN BE. Bulgari once again announces its third world record, this time for the slimmest ultra-thin self-winding watch on the market
Bulgari’s Octo Finissimo was awarded a world record for in 2014 for having the thinnest movement with a flying tourbillon, and it was once again awarded another world record in 2016 for producing a timepiece with the thinnest minute repeater. This year Bulgari once again proves its prowess by introducing another award-winning watch under the Octo Finissimo line, this time producing a wristwatch with the slimmest ultra-thin self-winding mechanism on the market. The Octo Finissimo Automatic was officially launched during BaselWorld 2017.
Creating a thin timepiece such as the Octo Finissimo takes more than just slimming down and shrinking the internal elements, as it requires each individual component to be redesigned to successfully achieve the desired thinness, without compromising on the integrity of the overall timepiece. The final result is an award-winning timepiece with a thickness of only 5.15mm, while its self-winding movement is just 2.23mm thick for a 40mm diameter.
To successfully obtain the desired thinness for the new Octo Finissmo Automatic, Bulgari uses a new in-house movement, the Calibre BVL 138 that is only 2.23mm thick, which is slightly thinner than a nickel. The automatic winding mechanism utilizes a platinum micro-rotor which guarantees efficiency. As if to show off its watchmaking abilities even further, not satisfied in just featuring the ultra-thin watch caliber, the movement is hand-decorated with Côtes de Genève and given circular-grained finishing, which results in a watch that is not only impressive in watchmaking terms, but a timepiece that considers its outward appearance.
The extreme thinness of the Bulgari Octo Finissimo Automatic, although looks simplistic, it proves a watchmaker’s ability to pare down the complexity of a timepiece to its bare essentials, yet presenting it in a design that is not only minimalistic but also powerful.
