His unusual painting style combines oil and ink along with watercoloring to capture Balinese imagery in ways never before seen. An exhibition of Karyana’s work, entitled “Evolution,” will be on display at Bridges Bali (Jl. Campuhan, Ubud, Bali; (62) 361 970095; <a href="http://bridgesbali.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">bridgesbali.com</a>) until March 23.

Karyana, who was born in Lombok, is a self-taught natural talent. As a young boy, he started to practice drawing on the ground by imitating the illustrations from comic books he read. He kept drawing as a hobby without any training from a teacher. Forced to drop out of high school, Karyana was lucky enough to become part of a government established art community in Mataram. In his early career, Karyana painted in the modes of realism and naturalism.

After a stint working in a gallery in Ubud as a modern painter, Karyana moved back to Mataram and used his new experiences to experiment in creating several new techniques and concepts. In 2005, Karyana created the technique he uses today, combining watercolors with oil and ink what he terms his Evolution concept. He has used this technique to render Indonesian animals and icons in a completely new way.
